Gang Building used to be the annex of Wu Laun Qi’s mansion, a businessperson’s house in Ching Dynasty. The Wu Laun Qi Mansion was built in 1880 and now only the Gang Building is left. Back to then, Wu Luan Qi was assigned to take the responsibility to make the Taichung province capital. In order to receive officials and guests, the mansion was built at the intersection of Fuxing road and Dazi road. |
The receiving mansion was removed during 1980s. In order to conserve the site, the local government decided to move part of the building to Taichung Park. The removal was completed in 1983. It is the only kind of building that is left in Taiwan now. |
Gang Building is also named Drum Building. The two-story design is composed of the gate in the first story and the balcony in the second. It is used to observe and to tell time by striking drums. |
A couplet is read on the gate, “To climb higher and overlook, stop and listen to the hour.” The roof is designed as flying shape like the swallow’s tail. Rails and ceramic tiles decorate the balcony. |
The age-old building is now located in the Taichung Park. Reinforcing iron bars and cement have replaced its inner structure; the exterior wall shines with the new painting. However, this change doesn’t affect its appearance. Believing that it should be treated as a time-telling building, the local government put a brazen bell inside the building about two years ago. |
