February 9, we head to Taichung Park to see the lantern festival at night. It was crowded everywhere. We walked along the path next to Sun Moon Lake. Water dancing show lasted for half an hour. Big lanterns can be seen everywhere. What caught our eye was the 100th birthday cake. On the cake were signs of Hu Xin Pavilion, sheep and candles. Don't miss this lantern display when you visit Taichung.

 

2003 Taiwan Lantern Display-“Taichung Park Display Area” and “Jing Guo Avenue Display Area” in the festival lights.

Because of the 100th anniversary of Taichung Park, Taichung Lantern Festival is going to take place in Taichung Park and Jing Guo Avenue. The places should be ready before February 8, 2003. The celebration will start on February 9 and end on February 23. National Lantern Display will start on February 14 and also ends on February 23. The use of Jing Guo Avenue will be divided into two sections. From National Art Gallery to Minsheng road section is served for the city government to decorate and hold activities. Minsheng road section to National Science Museum is served for national lantern display’s use.

Sponsored by Department of Transportation, 2003 National Lantern Display will take place in Taichung Civil Plaza and Jing Guo Avenue. In response to the festival, Taichung city government along with private resources plans a dual lantern districts to light up this city. Many activities are also designed for this occasion. The goal is, “Activity for every moment, theme in every single day and topic for every night.” People from all places are welcome to this feast.

As for exhibitions in the park, lights are jointed with Hu Xin Pavilion, Sun Moon Lake, Gang Building and other spots to give an impressive sight. The themes are “Three sheep celebrate peace” and “Five mammon meet with joy”, which are presented in different designs of lantern, display district and lights avenue, century age discovery. 

Other activities include folk culture drama, street performers’ contest, returning musical concert, tour instruction, firework displaying, Taichung theater, entertainers’ show, chorus and a lot more.

“2003 Taiwan Lantern Display Series” is open during February 8 to 23. Visitors can enjoy an impressive lunar lantern festival. As usual, “Taichung Park Lantern District” will be inaugurated at the daybreak of February 9.  The ceremony will go with conventional ritual. Due to the auspicious meaning of “Thousand Years Feast”, the mayor Mr. Hu will light up lanterns in the park district with 10 hundred years old elders. It’s the beginning of the celebration.

As for another display district along Jing Guo Avenue, it is also divided into several areas with individual topics, such us the entrance conception area, island area, theme area, folk art crafts street, national lantern competition area, and a lot more you name it. The theme lantern this year, “Lucky sheep and good health”, is seven stories high one. It will be set on the Civil Plaza and will be tested on February 14 (also February 14 in lunar calendar). However, the official opening will be on the eve of lunar lantern day when Mr. President inaugurates the ceremony.
