History of the Elementary School

¡@¡@Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School was founded by Fathers of Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CICM) rooted from Belgium by means of fundraising. In 1949, Fathers of CICM moved to Taiwan from China because of the movement of the government. In 1959, Father Jeroom Heyndrickx was appointed by Superior Rev. Valeer. Albers to be the parochial vicar of San-Ming parish. When Father Jeroom Heyndrickx was walking on Shuang-Shih Rd which is in San-Ming parish, he started to think that Catholic spirit ¡¥philanthropy¡¦ can be propagated by building a church and a Catholic elementary school in this district. After Superior Rev. Valeer Albers approved of the suggestion of building Catholic school , Fathers began to raise funds in foreign countries. Thus, building Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School had been decided.

¡@¡@After the school was established in 1967, school administration started to develop well. In the meanwhile, Fathers and Sisters who had great enthusiasm for evolving school affairs noticed that there were a group of children neglected by our society because of the limited education resource of our government. In order to take care of those children, Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School established special classes for students with mental retardation in 1971 and became the first private elementary school with special class in Taiwan. The purpose of building special classes is to enhance Jesus¡¦ spirit ¡¥Let Children Come to Me.¡¦ which means that all life should be respect and be concerned to develop their nature endowed by God. Moreover, it is like that the scent of each flower is different and the shape of each leaf is different, so although the children with limited mental ability, every life has different opportunities to develop its own potential.

Founders of Yu Jen¡XFathers and Sisters

After foreign Church founded Yu Jen, local Church took over school affairs.

¡@¡@With the guidance of Presidents over the years and the efforts made by all staff, Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School is growing up strongly and sturdily. In addition, one of the strategies of CICM is to transfer manpower to where needs help, after the institution which they built is mature enough to hand over to a local church. Therefore, in 1986, Chinese Sisters were in charge of Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School gradually. Taiwanese churches gained a lot of inspiration because of the¡¥temporal¡¦contribution of CICM from Belgium.

¡@¡@Because predecessors¡¦ efforts and foreign Fathers¡¦ dedication with their enthusiasm in Taiwan, they built up Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School stage by stage and their contribution also achieved a successful accomplishment. Moreover, although foreign friends and students did not understand much about the Eastern countries which are far away from their country, they were still willing to donate their money to Fathers and teachers to help those children in Taiwan. Today Yu Jen Catholic Elementary School is like a big tree which has grown up from a young shoot and we should cherish predecessors¡¦ efforts which make us be able to relax under the shade of the big tree. It is said that one of two places where God lives is Heaven and the other one is in the hand of philanthropist and people with compassion. We should be grateful to have people's love and God's gift.

Origin of the name of the school

¡@¡@When it comes to the name of our school, Father Wang Yong-Qing thought that Jen¡¥mercifulness¡¦is the main spirit of Church as it is said that wherever there is mercifulness, wherever there is love, wherever it is the place God lives in. In addition, because the names of the schools built by CICM need to include Jen¡¥mercifulness¡¦, names like Pei Jen¡¥nurture mercifulness¡¦, Huai Jen¡¥think about mercifulness¡¦, Chung Jen¡¥uphold mercifulness¡¦, Yu Jen ¡¥nurture mercifulness¡¦, and Yu Jen¡¥abundant in mercifulness¡¦ were considered. Finally, Yu Jen¡¥nurture mercifulness¡¦ was decided to be the name of the elementary school because the meaning of the name is close to the nature of education.

After the six aspects arrive mature, like blossom, bear fruit, seeds become a forest, and larvae become angels, the result is what people who work for education wish to see. In addition, the most important is that it takes a lot of time in making seeds to be a forest and larvae to be angels. Therefore, we need mutual encouragement to achieve the result.
