大坑由來

What does Dakeng area point to? According to the government's division, it contains the prior administrative changed  part, including the boundary of scenic area, its history and the space where local residents who identified in their daily life. The identity refers to the residents who immigrated in 1980s', the capitals of recreation industry and all people who interacted in the social network at that time. As the margin was dynamic, multidimensional and unfixed, the local identity of its history has been debated on the local construction.

The popular saying of Dakeng's name results from the valley about 350 meters wide that the residents built and lived. Taiwan's Topographic Map, published in 1904, has shown Dakeng's name, which is located in Dakeng Valley and belonged to Dakeng Village by the government's administrative division.
Most people define Dakeng's boundaries by its natural position. Its eastern boundary is the line from Touke Mountain to Erke Mountain. The northern boundary is the Hsinshe River terraces. The southern boundary is the Buzhikeng Stream and the western boundary is from Xipin Mountain to Dashamu to Guanyin Mountain's crest line. By the administrative division, Dakeng Villages include Cedongshang Fort, which is separated from jyungongliao Village of the western Cedongxia Fort and Buzhi Village. That is, the western part of Dakeng's administrative division has been reassigned, the others still continue using nowadays. Therefore, the government's division is definitely arranged by the natural landform.

In the End of Japanese Colonial Period, the administrative division of Dakeng comprised "Dakeng Five Forts," viz Dakeng Fort One, Fort Two and Fort Three, which are Minde Village, Dakeng Village and Dongshang Village now, respectively, and Buzhi Fort One and Two, which are Buzhi Village and Minjheng Village now, respectively. In addition, Jyungongliao Village was divided into Jyungong Fort One and Two, which are Jyungong Village and Heping Village, respectively. Dakeng area was brought into Taichung City in 1947. Except for Dakeng Fort Two, others have all changed their toponyms. The Dakeng Five Forts were renamed Dakeng Village, Minde Village, Dongshan Village, Minjheng Village and Buzhi Village. They are identified by local residents as "Dakeng Five Villages."

In 1970's Taichung City's Plan Structure, Dakeng area was divided into scenic area (approximately 2000 hectares) and protected area (approximately 1800 hectares). The west line is based on the contour 200 meters high. Taichung City Government decided to bring Dakeng Scenic Area into the city plan structure in 1973 and bring Dakeng Village, Dongshan Village, Minjheng Village, Buzhi Village and Heping Village into the scenic area in 1976. Hence, Dakeng Scenic Area has become a margin in Dakeng  and a new name for outsiders. However, this regional margin provided the insiders a complicated feeling. On the other hand, the government's permission to develop the land and to use 20 percent of Coverage Ration (50 percent of outside) to "limit" the residents' "development." But the statements of "Yangmingshan National Park" and "Taichung's Back Garden" for the scenic area seem to offer the local a vision of "development."
