Dakeng area is a natural ecological zoo in Taichung City's suburb. You may unexpectedly meet unusual reptiles and mammals there. It is also a big beautiful natural bird garden, you may consider it the best ecological classroom to observe the insects' ecology, wild Macaque's groups and birds' activities.  The common mammals include Taiwanese Macaques, Formosan hairy-footed flying squirrels, Speedy Gonzales, Red-bellied tree squirrels and Moles. Lizards often appear on the handrail of the path to greet visitors. On the ground or rocks taking a sunbath are Shanghai Skinks. Sometimes you may find Warm Snakes, Taiwan Beauty Snakes and other kinds in the gaps of the stratum. There are also many kinds of beautiful butterflies, dragonflies, cicadas which sing in hot summer and cricket etc. According to Taichung City Wild Bird Society's observation, there are about 53 kinds of birds staying here. The common birds like Brown Shrink, Chinese Bulbul, Common Kingfisher, Gray-cheeked Fulvetta and Muller's Barbet and rare protected birds like Crested Goshawk, Crested Serpent Eagle and Sparrow Hawk.

  Among Dakeng's animals, Taiwanese Macaques is most particular. People can see them easily in the mountains. The present Dakeng's Walking Trail from One to Five was built according to early Macaques' walking paths. Local residents call it as the "Monkey road."  Walking on the trails, you may see some Macaques stay nearby. On summer's night while you are prying about the fireflies, don't forget that Macaques are  waiting for your visiting. Any kind of insect or little squirrel on the tree that you unexpectedly find  would make you feel fun.
