DESCRIPTION OF “OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY”

Taichung is a city with mild climate. It’s also rich with a lot scenic spots and heritages. The most significant landmark of this city is Taichung Park. The heritage and history of this park is very intriguing. It makes us realize the importance of cultural resources. We have to cherish it and maintain it properly. In this way, we can enable next generation to understand our remarkable heritage and culture.

PROJECT GIST

We chose Taichung Park as the topic for our project research. Speaking of Taichung City, Taichung Park comes to people’s mind. It’s the best place for local’s recreation and health. Many historical and cultural heritages can be found in the park. By this project, we hope people can learn to maintain our precious cultural heritage and make later generation understand the history of Taiwan.

OUR INTERNET ENVIRONMENT

Our computer rooms are equipped with 60 LEMEL computers with LTD monitors. The authorized Windows 98 system is used. Each classroom is also equipped with at least one computer for teachers or students to use.

OUR PROBLEMS

In order to make a perfect website, we encountered many technical problems. However, we overcame the problems still. What are the problems? At first, group members had time conflict. We understood the importance of the competition; therefore, we made use of noon break. We even spent our group activities time in the computer room. Some of us were even crazier. They went to computer room to do the task after school. The procedure is very tiring.

Besides time, our techniques also improve along with time. When I was doing the articles, there were always problems such as incomplete data, wrong color, lack of inspiration, missing files and so on and so forth. I encountered any kind of problems; you name it. Our two smart teachers asked to stop our work for a while and focus on what was missing. In a very short time, we got everything ready. Then we could move on and catch up our schedule.

In order to do this project, we also had field trips in order to observe, record and listen to explanation. Here comes the problem too. Many of us needed to attend tutoring class on holidays, having trips or participating contests. We managed to save our time for this project. Some of us still had problem to participate. But we got solution. We tape-recorded our field trip.

Because of the two patient and gentle teachers, even we encountered a lot of troubles, we still could learn and improve during the procedure. They are also our motivation to go ahead.

OUR EFFORTS

Tsai Ting An 

 In the middle of August, the teachers selected us to participate this painstaking competition (since we had to give up our noon break, it’s painstaking). It’s indeed an honor to be part of the team because it means we have better computer skills. For honor’s sake, we still came to the computer room everyday to complete this website gradually.

Now, the hard procedure improved our skills as well as my aesthetic taste.

Because of everyone’s efforts, the website is done now. We have a better understanding of Taichung Park. Hope our efforts can pay off and we can earn a reputation for our school.

Yu Bing Han

 I’ve been responsible for making illustration and picture for this website. Everyone said I did a good job and I agree with that. I’ve put a lot of efforts into it. I made drawings like Hu Xin Pavilion, Wang Yue Pavilion, Zhong Zheng Bridge and etc. These pictures made the website more outstanding, and I feel quite accomplished about it.

Among all the pictures, the most difficult one should be Zhong Shang Bridge. The teacher said the bridge I drew looked like going to fall apart. Therefore, I had to make a new one. When the teacher was happy about it, I felt relieved.

I am really glad to have this opportunity to participate in this website competition, and it improves my drawing skills.

Huang Zi Hau

At the very beginning, I was not used to PhotoImpact 6. However, after teachers’ patient instruction, I became computer savvy and made god use of this software. The procedure was very difficult, however, I believe our efforts will pay off.

I had a really hard time when doing buttons because I don’t have aesthetic taste. However, the smart computer teacher showed me some tips that triggered my imagination and creativity.

I appreciate that the teacher gave me this opportunity to make website. That improves my computer skills. Hope our work can have a good result.

Lee Yu Cheng

In the past days, I’ve worked hard to make drawings to meet everyone’s needs. The beautiful Gang Building and Pao Tai Hill in the front page are my excellent work. No matter how the teachers and classmates tease me, I believe my job is great.

Because of this opportunity, I can produce good drawings by computer. Not only the color, but also details are all within my concern. Moreover, I become closer to other team members.

Now, the website is ready. Hope we can gain a good result.

Huang Zhou Yi

I received a notification at the end of fifth grade and that required as to attend a ten days long computer camp. I was very happy because I was selected among the 200 sixth grade students. After the computer camp, we thought that was the end. However, when the next semester started, the computer teachers informed us another website competition was waiting for us. That was really a surprise.

During the procedure, I was assigned to make titles. It’s a painstaking job. Each title needs different design and color to go with background. There’re not too much choices. Only three elements are available to make changes. It’s hard.

Now, the website is almost done. Hope a good result can pay off our precious noon breaks.

Fu Yu Xuan

Since I was chosen to engage in this competition, I’ve been learning computer skills from the teachers. I encountered a lot of problems, however, with teachers’ instruction, I’ve been making progress day after day.

Once the teacher asked me to design background, the initial result was a complete disaster. However, after the teachers’ instruction, now my job is terribly great. Another similar situation happened when the teacher asked me to design level lines. I was stunned because it was the first time. But the result wasn’t that bad as I expected.

Now, the website is done. From It built from nothing. I really appreciate our teachers’ patient instruction. Hope our website can earn a good prize.

Huang Guo Xuan

In the summer vacation, we were selected to do the website competition. Not everyone has the honor to participate it. We are all the tops ones. We had great time as well as difficult time in the procedure, however, we’re all happy to take challenges.

We learned far more than we had expected from this experience. We also appreciate two beautiful teachers’ instruction. Not only my computer skills enhanced, but also my mental. That’s it.

Chang Kai Ping

I’ve enjoyed every moment since I was chosen to do the website. I like computer a lot and was really glad to be part of the team. The teachers told us that we had to make use of our noon break in the computernoon.

I didn’t join the team till the later part. It’s been a couple of months since then. The activity conducted by Housewife Association impressed me a lot. It help both of our understanding of the park and the website construction. Therefore, I was the first one to sign up the activity when informed of it.

After the teachers’ daily instruction, I have ea better understanding of the situation. Hope we have a good result.

Wu Cheng Xun

Because of the teacher’s recommendation, I joined this team for this competition. I learned a lot from this experience, including photo dealing, web pages, titles and background designing.  Starting without the slightest idea about PhotoImpact software, the whole hard learning procedure is more than words.

I showed up in the computer room on time almost every noon, in order to do my part of job. I just transferred to this school and didn’t really know any classmates. The participation enabled me to know a lot of friends. Sometimes we were playing and making fun, however, we did our jobs with all efforts.

Now that the task is done, we can finally take good break in noon. I really expect a good result and I’m sure these days will be part of my memory.

 

III. PROJECT ELEMNTS

1)

Elementary group: Please elaborate the relation between this project research and the 1st-9th Grades Curriculum Alignment.

1st –9th Grades Curriculum Alignment emphasizes local learning, culture, teamwork, and information application. It requires people to know to enjoy the nature from different perspectives.

The current goal of education is multi-learning. By this chance, we use website to understand the well-kept heritages that witness history.

In order to deal with many articles and journal, we had to do a lot of brainstorming. This exercise allows us to improve our language capability and arrangement skills. Meanwhile, we learn the precious cultural heritage of this city and the idea of heritage conservation. This is how we learn local culture.

Usage of Internet helps us save time and extend our learning. Within the shortest time to gain the utmost information is always a lesson that modern people need to learn to keep up with the intensive pace.

We also learn cooperation, teamwork, color matching, article editing, drawing skills and so on. At the very beginning, some software was very strange to us. We never had much chance to use it. We may have a little knowing of some software, but it’s another story to apply it. Therefore, we had to start from the very beginning. Learning and reviewing were undertaking at the same time.

Our team deserves recognition. When we had different opinions, we were all very willing to accept each other’s advice and find the best solution. Or, sometimes we’d combine each other’s advantage and come up better idea from the combination. We never hesitated to give each other support or help when there were any problems.

Speaking of field trip, kids of our age always prefer to stay at home playing video games, surfing or sleeping. However, this opportunity allowed us to enjoy the beauty of the nature. Enjoying the technology at home is no longer our motto.

Multi-learning also pronounces teamwork. This opportunity strengthens our friendship and we helped each other to become a master in making website.

Our motivation for this project is to extend our knowledge and combine the multi-learning approach into this research.

Usage
The set of software we used include IE6.0, FrontPage 2000, PhotoImpact 6.0,painter, ACDsee, Ulead GIF Animator 4.0, Word2000, Outlook Express and so on. We knew most software in our fifth grade. However, not till producing the website do we become familiar with them. Our instructors always emphasizes that we need to use computers to make vivid pictures.

Among above resources, we particularly like the interaction with interviewees. The personal experiences are real and impressive.

What approaches did you take to play the role of website fair ambassadors?

We are all ambassadors. We personally met our interviewees and talked to them. Each of us prepared questions and made appointments before interview. Therefore, we are all ambassadors.

When we had questions, we’d think who’s the best one to give us the answers. Once we decided whom to interview, we’d make appointment and relative details by phone call, and then follow through our plans.

Mr. Lin Liang Zhe offered us answers about heritage topics.

Mr. Lin Liang Zhe is very knowledgeable of the heritage and history of Taichung Park. We attended to the heritage tour in which he gave the explaining speech. Also, we asked for his advice to enrich our website content. Besides, we wrote email to the city mayor and talked to his secretary by phone in order to understand the city government’s play for Taichung Park. By this way, we had a better understanding of our researching topic.

What impact the project imposes on you?

We are surrounded by the beautiful nature. However, because of the intense life pace of mondern people, seldom do we have recreation time to get near to the nature.

By this opportunity, we all realize that it’s not so difficult to embrace the nature. Nature is in our daily life, like Taichung Park. In the park, you can see different kinds of plants. Bigger ones are like the century old trees-java silk trees; smaller one like grass. Butterflies are dancing all over while turtles are defending lotus leaves. If you have time, hope you can embrace the nature like we do.

Your website may not last for a long period. Please elaborate how the relationship between your school and local place is strengthened through this project.

This project research makes us see the importance of environmental conservation. Taichung Park has been in existence since Japan’s reign. It offers a good place for people to exercise because it’s in the downtown. Because realizing the importance of maintaining the environment, now we are used to cleaning our own environment. Our family all praise our new good habit.

We’re also proud of this park and glad to be part of Taichung City. We’ll carry this pride with us whenever we are.

We made this website to help Taiwan people understand the importance of this city. It also helps foreigners who are not yet familiar with this country have insightful view of our culture. Some foreign tourists come to Taiwan to learn about the locals. They also make good contribution to our tourism business.   

Elaborate what kind of advantage your project research does to the school, parents and local community.

You’ll understand the importance of exercising once you are in Taichung Park. Many people are here to dance, to play balls, to walk and to bike. Some classmates’ families have a better understanding of Taichung Park because of this project. They are also learning how to maintain this park and share the responsibility as one of Taichung locals. 

How to maintain our environment? Even if you are busy and have no more time for extra contribution, you can pick up littering whenever you saw it. Or, simply by not littering, you’re doing your contribution. Or, you can use some cleaning tools to help clearing.

Learn to understand Taichung Park, and you’ll be more aware of it. Environmental conservation won’t be too difficult.

How the locals offer help or engage in your project research?

Mr. Lin from Taichung Culture Department, for example, provided us old photos of the park, explained the history and the original situation to us. He offered the first-hand and precise information. He is a great help to us.

Most teams in website fair need a lot of advice and assistance to complete their jobs. How about you?

We don’t really need a great deal of assistance. However, we did take advices. Some advices are short, however, we could come up more ideas from them. We’re all very happy that the teachers could have smart students like us to do this job.

At first, we’d like to appreciate Mr. Lin’s help. We attended the heritage tour led by him. He offered us a lot of information, which couldn’t be found on net. He also corrected those wrong messages we found via net. His professional knowledge helps our entire website content. He even provided us old photos of Taichung Park. We really appreciate his help.

Aunts from housewife association are teaching us about plants.

Then, we’d like to thank those beautiful and energetic aunts. We participated the learning tour conducted by them. We learned what we couldn’t from other places.

Elaborate the project website and intellectual property right

Under the teachers’ instruction, we attached the sources to the text as long as we didn’t produce the text by ourselves. For examples, we found materials about Taichung Lantern Display 2002 via net. After editing, we marked the sources and stated all rights are reserved for Taichung City Government.

Sometimes we’d combine different material and put it on the website after deleting and editing. Sometimes we wrote our own material by real experiences. We all respect intellectual property rights. We won’t copy information and post it. Instead, we’ll combine different sources and add our opinions to it.

Therefore, learn to respect intellectual property rights.

7)

Discovery, lesson and wonder

We found that many practices on the net are obviously against law. We know the importance of not violating intellectual property right. The right thing to do is to publish our own work. We learn a lesson from this experience.

To our surprises, we found that once we figured out a problem of one kind. Later whenever we encountered similar problems, we could solve them at ease. The teachers were very happy with our capability. Sometimes without the teachers’ instruction, we still could figure out things. We are smart cookies.

They are our wonders and discoveries.
