The current elegant Hu Xin Pavilion

The exotic Hu Xin Pavilion, standing upon the artificial lake (later called Sun Moon Lake), is the most significant landmark inside Taichung Park. It’s also called Sun Moon Pavilion, Zhong Zheng Pavilion or Lake Pavilion. During Japan’s reign, it was marked as Hongyuan Cabinet or Fragrance Cabinet.

On October 24, 1908, the opening of Taiwan vertical railway took place in Taichung Park. Dairen Prince from Japan imperial family hosted the opening. In order to prepare for the opening, the local government built this pavilion. Meanwhile, the original pond was expanded to the artificial lake that occupies 4100 level ground. The pavilion served as the rest room and view room. Later it turned to the landmark of Taichung Park. The prince also planted a camphor tree in the park.

Hu Xin Pavilion is a dual-pinnacle design based on the same platform. Beneath the platform, the bolster is made out of cement. Above the platform, the pillars are wooden. The rail is iron. Light brackets are set on the main pillar. The pinnacle part is made out of four crossing arcs. With the unique design and the color, the pavilion in the reflection of the water is always the favorite scene of many photographers’ cameras. Their photos convey the landmark in the park as well as the beautiful recreation space in this city.
